All About the Eyes

The eye area is the thinnest and most delicate skin on the case. It is actually five times thinner than the rest of the face.

Along with this, it has less collagen and elastin fibers, which is why we often notice aging in this area earlier than others. Starting in our mid 20’s, our production of hyaluronic acid decreases leading to fine lines, wrinkles, volume loss, dark circles, dryness, etc.

So, protecting the eye area is important! It is important to use and eye product that is addressing YOUR concerns. For anti-aging benefits, look for products with growth factors (to stimulate collagen production) & hyaluronic acid (for extra hydration).

For dark circles, growth factors are also beneficial, as well as green tea extract, vitamin K, and caffeine.

For puffiness, bisabolol and caffeine can help; however, puffiness can also be related to other causes, such as allergies, which can be resolved with treatments such as anti-histamines. It is essential to remember that there is no miracle eye cream. Some retinoids are gentle enough to use on the under eye area, and if you are able to tolerate a retinoid under your eye, I would recommend this to increase cell turnover to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

I would recommend using an eye cream first as a barrier, then applying the retinoid on top to prevent irritation or dryness. If you are just starting your skincare journey, I say invest in your core three first (Vitamin C, Retinoid, and daily SPF), and just carry your products up to your under eye.

Aquaphor is also a common product most have at home, so this can be applied as a barrier for retinoid use to prevent irritation to the under eye.

Currently, I am loving Lumiere by Neocutis. It contains growth factors, sodium hyaluronate, glycyrrhetinic acid (also for brightening), caffeine, bisabolol, and Vitamin C aka ALL of the goods.
